About Atlanta Women's Weekend

The Atlanta Women's Weekend, located in Alpharetta, GA, is an annual event that gives Christian women time together to study the Bible.

Our goal is to encourage women from Atlanta and beyond to learn from each other and grow in God's Word. We gather for a few hours every October to praise God and immerse ourselves in Bible study.  We invite all women to join us in doing so.

This Website and the Atlanta Women’s Weekend is not supported by, organized by, run by, or directed by any particular church. We are individual Christian women helping other women grow in the Lord our God. The 2023 Atlanta Women's Weekend Committee is Sherridon Dobbs, Debra Douthitt, Paula Hovater and Liza Mahn. See us on Facebook.

2023 Keynote Speakers

Stephanie Haley

Stephanie lives in Plant City, Florida with her husband John of 34 years. Together they work with the Valrico church where John serves as an elder.  They are blessed with six sons, three daughters-in-law and two grandsons with the third grandson on the way. Stephanie has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and finds such joy working in home health.   Stephanie has been a part of the Tampa Bay Ladies Weekend Planning Committee for the past seven years.  She also serves as a counselor at FC Florida camp and FC Camp Rock.  She loves teaching Bible classes, especially teen girls, cooking and entertaining.

Laura Johnson

Laura Johnson

Laura Johnson lives in Flowery Branch, GA, with John, her husband of 34 years. They have 5 children--two “launched,” one in college, and two still at home. She considers being a stay-at-home mom the greatest blessing of her life and has been a homeschool mom for 20 years (only 7 more to go)!  Much of her adult life has been spent working with children and young adults. In addition to having taught in the public school system, she taught at Florida College for a few years, has taught in various ways as a member of homeschool groups, and has co-directed Florida College Virginia Camp for the past 17 years.   She loves a good book, a good cup of coffee or tea, and (when not injured), a good run or bike ride. Laura and her family attend the Gainesville (GA) church of Christ.

2023 Workshop Leaders

Robin Clifton

Robin Clifton

Robin has been a disciple of Christ for over 45 years. She began her spiritual journey as a teen after running away from home with one thought in mind: “There’s got to be a better way to live.” Three days after she was found and brought home, she received a Bible in the mail – with no note or return address. That was when her journey began as she began to read it and search for what would fill the gaping hole of angst in her heart. Robin and her husband Paul raised three children in the mountains and mission field of Utah. She is Nana to 7 grandchildren and 2 grand dogs and is a pretty good chaos coordinator. She recently had a book published, Seventy times Seven – The Transforming Power of Forgiveness, which is about her pilgrimage of faith and forgiveness, and the lessons she learned along the way.

Loretta Newman

Loretta Newman lives in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. She is the wife of James Newman.   They worship and the Embry Hills church of Christ in Atlanta where he serves as an elder.  She is the mother of 4 adult children.   Two of her sons recently have gotten married so she is enjoying two daughters.  She stays busy serving the saints at her local congregation.  Loretta has been a nurse for the last 35 years.  She currently is employed as a transplant coordinator for a local hospital.  In her spare time she enjoys cooking, baking, reading and gardening. She is thankful for all of God's blessings great and small.

Kim Keenan

Kim Keenan lives in Temple Terrace, FL with her husband, Kerry, of 33 years and their youngest daughter who has been physically and mentally disabled since birth.  Kim and Kerry worship at Temple Terrace Church of Christ where Kerry serves as a full time evangelist and elder.  Kim has three other adult children, three adorable granddaughters and a grandson on the way.

Growing up in Colorado Springs, CO, Kim moved to Florida in 1985.  She has remained there except for the time she and Kerry worked with churches in Romania and later Canada. Although challenging at times, Kim considers the five years abroad some of the best, filled with blessings and lessons learned. They are grateful to God for all the opportunities He has brought their way and pray He entrusts them with many more.

2023 Song Leader

Bonny Cable

Bonny Cable currently lives in Temple Terrace, Florida with her husband, Joe, and 2 boys, Jack and Jett. By day she is a full time education professor at Florida College in the education program where she is thrilled to impact education by teaching future teachers. She moonlights as PTA volunteer for her boys’ school. For fun, Bonny enjoys reading, decorating her home for every holiday and season, and baking is her true love language! Her past musical involvement range from being a proud high school band nerd, member of the Florida College chorus, and a singer in Florida College’s traveling Friends group back in the day. Bonny loves music most of all because she knows we are offering our song of praise to our God who enjoys and is glorified by music, too!

“Sisters Honoring Sister”

2023: Caneta Hall

I graduated from high school in the spring of 1947. When I told my friends I was going to David Lipscomb College, they all laughed and said I was going there to find a preacher. My reply was, “Not me!” But I did and will be thankful for the rest of my life.

Sewell has always wanted to go where he was needed. We first went to Montgomery Bible School, a small and very poor college, but one willing to accept all students whether they could pay or not! Our pay was $100 per month until the money ran out—usually the third or fourth month.

When we heard of a small church in New Jersey that was looking for a preacher, we decided to go. We were going to make a real sacrifice for the Lord. But we learned a lesson confirmed throughout the years. When you go to preach there are so many
blessings that you forget sacrifice. There are problems of one kind or another, but always you are thankful for the experience.

We have been blessed to live in foreign lands: four years in Nigeria, two in England and one in New York City. Since the Iron Curtain came down we have been invited to Eastern Europe to visit churches in Moscow, Prague, Budapest, Brno, Bratislava, Bucharest and Constantia, Romania. Before these opportunities, we visited Norway and Germany. Sewell also spent three months in Australia and some weeks in South Africa and Brazil. I have often laughed and said, “If you don’t want him, don’t ask him.”

When we decided to go to Nigeria the first time, the response from both our parents was, “You go if you feel you must, but leave Cherry and Gardner with us!” Through the years, our parents were blessed and gained much satisfaction from our work. We feel that our children also benefited from their experiences.

One special day at the Kentish Town church in London a few years ago, I noticed a Nigerian woman and after service I started a conversation with her. She turned out to be the daughter of a fine man Sewell had taught and baptized 40 years earlier. She remembered us and our children. Two years in the bush was worth it! Our sadness has come from those who at first obeyed, then fell away. It is difficult for us in this land to understand the tremendous problems those in other cultures face.

So I would encourage any who can to go. Jesus told us to! But if you cannot go, help those who can. Eastside church in Athens, Alabama, Embry Hills in Atlanta and several individuals have stood with us in these journeys. Encourage those you know to go into all the world.

For years we have had a standard joke when trying to make some decision: “Well, maybe we should just go to Afghanistan.” And just a few days ago Sewell had an email from a young soldier who has been there and hopes to return to preach the gospel when the Lord
opens the door. The Lord does open doors. Maybe we can go after all. That would be wonderful.
— Caneta Hall

When Caneta wrote this in 2004, she and Sewell were working with the Upper West Manhattan congregation in New York City and also trying to encourage the many small congregations in New England by traveling to visit whenever a gospel meeting was announced, something they both enjoyed greatly. In December of 2005, they moved to work in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, until 2008, when they returned to the Embry Hills congregation in Atlanta, living in “the house on the hill.” In 2011, they moved into a condo just across the interstate from the Embry Hills building. It was there, on February 19, 2020, that she passed peacefully from this earth. She had served quietly but effectively as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and even as a great-grandmother, but most importantly, as a Christian woman who constantly served others as she served Christ Jesus.

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her.”
- Proverbs 31:28

FUNDRAISING BY SILENT AUCTION

Your gift is important to our event. The Silent Auction which hums quietly in the background enables us to provide scholarships for a few sisters who otherwise would not be able to attend. In addition, the funds enable us to offer student pricing and to defray various event expenses benefiting all attendees! During the Bible study breaks, the auction area is buzzing with laughter. It is an enjoyable time for many women as it provides an opportunity to socialize, meet new friends, and create lasting relationships.

To Contribute: We appreciate anything you choose to donate such as gently used items and especially handcrafted items.  Simply email Debra Douthitt at gatorz55@bellsouth.net with your desire to contribute.  She will even give you suggestions!  Please notify Debra with all donations by October 4th.  Then, you may bring the item directly to the event.
